unusual index alphabetization

I just upgraded from CS4 to CS5.5 and was hoping there might be some index improvements, but sadly no.

InDesign follows a strict letter-by-letter alphabetization, ignoring spaces and punctuation. Most of us are accustomed to word-by-word
alphabetization commonly found in dictionaries, etc. InDesign's method results in some like terms/names being awkwardly separated.
The only work-around I've found is to manually edit the index tag's “sort by” field. With thousands of entries, that is not a realistic option.

Just curious if anyone has come up with any magical script or plug-in kind of fix for this well-known issue.
