    “One or more index entries contain invalid characters. Please delete any invalid characters from the index”

    I get this warning while generating an index imported from Word.
    Does anybody know this error message and how to solve this issue?

    Sorry. Think and look first – then post!
    It was obviously that in the index panel were “#?” entries. Don’t ask me why I missed this.

    I've got this problem too, and can't figure out what's wrong. I've inserted 11000 index markers in text files, and on import they display correctly in the index panel. But when I want to generate, the dreaded message comes up:

    “The index could not be generated. One or more index entries contain invalid characters. Please delete any invalid characters from the index entries.”

    I've got no idea what the invalid characters are, so where do I start?

    Can anyone help?

    Sorry for answering this late. I was on a trip for 2 weeks.

    A client of mine had this problem. Here is how she found the reason. She limited the Word doc so she could exactly determine which chapter causes the problem. Then she took a closer look at the index entries. She found a double entry with wrong index markers. This caused in InDesign these crazy characters (which you can find in the index panel).
