I've been trying to figure out how to solve this problem for almost four hours now and I'm about to give up ;) !

On the first page of my document is a little transparent tiff placed. It's on the “graphics” layer which is on the bottom of the layer stack. The text is on the “text” layer, which is on the top. If I write a PDF the whole first page is written as if it would be a Bold font style. If I hide the graphic then everything is being displayed as it should.

I don't know what's the cause of this. I'm exporting a PDF 1.4, i. e. there is no transparency flattening happening when generating the PDF. There is no font subsetting, text is written in normal black (100k), but when Exporting I convert to sRGB (convert to profile), because it's going to be viewed over the internet. Text isn't set to overprint and there is no stroke assigned to it. I have no clue what the error is!

In my opinion it's impossible to get an error because of this transparent tiff? I'm writing a PDF 1.4 that means there can't even happen a flattening which could convert the text to outlines, which could lead to an inaccurate display in the PDF Reader.

What's also strange is that the problem doesn't occur when I move the graphic to the next page – although the image is placed RIGHT behind some text, which is even a worse scenario than on the error page where the image doesn't even touch the glyphs.

Any idea what could be the cause of this?

I have the latest update of InDesign CS5 installed, it's a german version.

The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps it is Acrobat that is displaying it incorrectly. Is it bold even if you zoom in on it in Acrobat? What if you change the display settings in Acrobat's preferences?

Yea, if I turn off the text smoothing then it is displayed in the same font weight on both sides. But does that explain why it is being displayed correct on one page and incorrect on the next? Even if it is because of the display preferences I am going to send it to a prepress company for an internship and I have no influence on their display preferences. And it would look amateurish if I would flatten the PDF for onscreen.

All I know for sure is that the issue has to do with the transparency from the tiff for some reason (Doesn't solve the problem with a PSD either).

And just right now the strangest thing happened! I exported a PDF 1.3 and now the text looks perfectly fine on the page!!! This is making absolutely no sense, is it?

Well I think I won't find a solution for this very soon … I've pretty much tried out everything I could. If anybody knows a solution feel free to post it. If I find a solution for it I'm gonna post it here of course.

I think I'll just accept the bolder text on the first page. Still better than having tons of white lines in the PDF due to flattening.

It does sound weird. But it sounds like an Acrobat problem, not InDesign. People think that Acrobat is perfect, but it is far from it, especially when it comes to onscreen display.

Sounds like you know what you're doing though. The prepress company would be crazy not to hire you. :)

Yes, I guess you're right it's probably an Acrobat problem.

I forgot to mention the font weight is the same on both pages when zoomed in to ~200+ so it has to be an Acrobat issue. Haha and I stayed up the whole night for this screw you Acrobat ;)!

Thanks David, that just made my day :)! I hope they see my passion. Showing your technical knowledge with a short application letter isn't very easy. And thanks for your help!
