I have created a movie using Captivate and added audio to it. I converted the SWF file to both a mov and mp4 file so that I can place it in an InDesign CS4 file. I placed the movie and added the poster and then exported it as a PDF to take it to an iPad via iTunes. The video plays in the PDF, but as soon as I place it into iTunes and sync with the iPad, the movie disappears within the PDF on the iPad. I would like to also create this as an ebook using the ePub feature within the InDesign software. Any thoughts as to what I'm doing incorrectly? We're trying to use the iPad as a training tool in our office by adding video to our manuals.

      Thanks

      Amy

Problems with PDFs on the iPad are Apple's fault (just as problems with PDFs in OS X's Preview).

You could try asking for other options or file formats for embedding the movie in an Acrobat forum (https://forums.adobe.com/commun…..ty/acrobat, for example), although it sounds like they also are likely to offer nothing more than their sympathies.

A better place to ask would be Apple's own forum :(

That is correct: There are MANY things that can play in Acrobat that do not work in Apple's (unfortunate) version of the PDF reader. In general, if you can see it in the Mac OS Preview application, then the iPad should be able to deal with it. But not always. It's extremely frustrating.

it also will not show the movie once I create the epub file and load it to the iPad. How are some people able to achieve this and others are not?

You should try to export your manuals as real ePub. Because the iBook-App of the iPad can play videos and audios. You can embed these via HTML 5 commands into the XHTML-file. Here’s an example:
      <video src=”movies/WTC-kurz.mp4″ controls=”true” width=”320″ height=”240″ autoplay=”false”>In case the player cannot play the video – you read this.</video>

The source points to an folder inside the ePub-file container “movie”.

PS Sigil a quiet good tool for working with ePub but it cannot deal with HTML 5 commands and will not show them even if they’re in the code. This is strange.

Yeah, currently the only way to get video or audio into an epub is to hack the epub file. This is discussed in various places, including https://blog.threepress.org/200&#8230;..o-in-epub/

So help me out. Do I go ahead and place the mp4 movie into the indesign cs4 file and then hack the code?

So do i place the mp4 movie into the indesign cs4 file and export as epub. How do I find the xhtml file? and do I just place the code at the end? Boy I wish you lived in Kansas City.

Yes, being in Kansas City would be much easier. And we could discuss this whole issue while drinking a beer ;-).

If you really want to dive into the wild world of creating ePubs, I highly recommend Liz Castros book about this topic. And no, you cannot insert a movie or code in InDesign, therefore you have to unzip the ePub and tweak and edit the XHTML-file itself.

      Hi-

I took your advice and bought the book. Could I send you the code to see if I have it correct? I can email you the files. I just need someone to show me once how to create the code and then I'll be set. Not sure where to place the video code within the html5. I was able to export the epub file and unzip it to get me to the code.

      Thanks

yes, you can send me your ePub file. You also can try the code I wrote above. Just edit and place the code – at the end of a paragraph – somewhere in your ePub. I uploaded an example: https://www.synp.net/fileadmin/&#8230;..ample.epub (I hope now the link is correct ;-)

There you can see how the code works and where to create the new movie-content-folder. It's not a big thing. Oh keep in mind: Adobe Digital Editions will not play the video! ADE can't deal with this peace of HTML 5. It's a crazy world out there. Like the beginning of the internet. Load the ePub to your iPad.

Another question. Do I just re-zip the folder and rename with epub extension and then reload it to the ipad?

tried the above and the ipad once synced was unable to read it.

can you mail me your ePub and maybe the video (if it's not tooo big or I take an smal sample). j.pannier@synp.net

Mmh, when the iPad cannot sync maybe it's because of the Apples playlist file – shit they always embed this in the ePub and I forgot to delete it. If you look into the ePub-file you can delete this file – it's on the first level.
