New user question – resizing frames

      Hi there.

I'm learning InDesign CS2 for newspaper layout. If anyone knows the answer to this question, I would be very grateful to hear it, as I think it would save me a lot of time.

Is there a way of making a frame (text box or otherwise) match its width or height exactly to that of another frame, without the original frame moving?

Example: I have created a text box. I then drag a second text box in from a library and drop it beside the first. I select both and click align to top, so they are aligned at the top but not at the bottom.

At this point, what is the quickest way to resize Box 2 so its bottom edge also aligns with that of Box 1? I only wish to move that edge – everything else is to remain exactly in position.

Normally I would do this manually by vertically resizing the bottom edge of Box 2. However, this is fiddly – is there any kind of shortcut? Alternatively, is there a way to resize in increments, in the same way as you can move entire frames in increments with the arrow keys.

Thanks in advance for any help,
      HarrogateHound.

As far as I know there's no automated way to do that, even in CS5 you'll most likely do it manually using Smart Guides or… You could copy the height of the original frame and then, after setting the second frame's anchor to the top, paste the height value and hit Enter (Return on Mac).

Aligning both frames isn't really necessary if you use the second method. If you want to manually resize the second frame (a.k.a. by dragging) aligning is necessary.

If you need visual aids, let me know and I'll look something up.

      Hi HarrogateHound,

You can use the MakeSameSize script to match frame sizes automatically.

And you can use a keyboard shortcut to resize frames. Mine is set for Ctrl+Shift+Alt+, . You can set your own shortcut under Edit – Keyboard Shortcuts… – then, in the “Product Area:” dropdown menu – Object Editing. There options for decreasing and increasing scale.
