Weird behaviour for Place command

Frequently I use the Place command (don’t we all?) and often use it to insert text or graphics inline (ie., with the Text Tool cursor positioned somewhere in a block of text). I have done this for years without ever striking this problem.

Now, however, although I have the Text Tool selected and have positioned my cursor at the point where I want the Placed material to go, once I select the file I want, suddenly my selected tool is no longer selected and my cursor has changed to a loaded cursor. All I can do is drop the intended text or graphic into a new text or graphic frame, then select it from within that new frame, cut it and, having again placed a text cursor into the “right” frame at the appropriate position, paste it. Life wasn’t meant to be like this!

I figured I must have inadvertently changed some setting somewhere but can find nothing in ID preferences. I checked also the dialog box that appears when I use the “Show import options” checkbox in the Place dialog box (differing according to whether I wish to Place text or a grahic). Nothing. What gives? What have I done wrong?

I’m using ID CS4 on a 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard.

      Check “Replace Selected Item” …

(ID treats a text cursor inside text as “selection”, even though the length of the selection is 0.)

Ah-hah! I had been deliberately turning off “Replace selected item” as my intuitive thought was that I had nothing selected and did not want my existing text frame to be replaced. How wrong I was! I just tried it out and it works like a charm.

Thank you, Jongware. I read all of your posts as you clearly understand ID better than most. I love this forum!

      (Blush) Aw shucks …

But you are correct to be careful: you may think you have a cursor in your text because you see the I-beam cursor, but you might have a text frame selected, and in that case you will replace the entire frame.

It's safest to stop and think what you want to do every time you are about to place something: either insert an image into the text (check: do you see your text cursor?), or put it anywhere on the pasteboard for later positioning (check: do you have nothing selected? (And to de-select everything, you can always hit the Deselect All key combo: Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + A.))

THANK YOU JONGWARE! I've never really understood the behavior of the place command with inline graphics.
