I have come across a situation that has exhausted my brain. . .

When packaging multiple files from an IDBook, if a font is embedded (in a PDF, etc.) in any of the individual files and is used as a “regular” font in another, it will not show up as a “regular” font that can then be packaged. Basically, if embedded anywhere, then it is no longer able to be be packaged. This only shows up when packaging via an IDBook — if a font is used as both embedded and “regular” in one doc that is being packaged, then the font will get packaged.

Seems to be that the problem lies in the way that the IDBook packages the fonts.

      Any work arounds?

If the font is embedded in a file you don't need it packaged.

If it's used in the layout of the text typed in InDesign then it will be packaged.

Seems to me that there is no need to package a font that is embedded?

Since this font is both embedded and used in text in another doc, it needs to be packaged for the printer. Since it shows up in the Book Preflight as embedded only (and not as OK status), it does NOT get packaged.

This only shows up as embedded only when packaging from the Book.

So you have the book and you have all the documents in the book.

You go to the sub menu of the Book Panel and say “Package” and it should collect everything into one folder, fonts in another, images in another.

Why are you packaging the book? Why not just export the book to a PDF and send that?

Yes, I have multiple docs in a Book. When I go to package this Book, it does NOT grab all the fonts since some of them are also embedded. I need to package this entire project for archiving purposes. Since font versions come and go, I always archive every part of the project for future revisions.

Give it a try. Create two different docs that have multiple similar fonts and the second one has one extra display font. Place them both in a book. Make a PDF of the second one and place this PDF in the first one. When you go to package the entire book, the display font from the second file will only show up as embedded and will NOT get packaged. Clearly, this font is also being used in File #2.

While this might not be a problem for some, this can cause great problems when I assume that all the fonts were packaged. Some of my projects can have upwards of 50-100 different fonts — a bit much to check one by one.

When I did this same test in CS3, it packaged ALL the fonts. This must be a CS4 issue. . .
