      Hi all,

I am brand new to Indesign and I'm so new I'm using a trial version until my software arrives next week. But I wanted to get started and dive in on a project I am working on for publication and need some experts to help me paddle along. I know this must be a million time question so I hope somebody will help.

I have quite a bit of text in MS word 2007 that I want to bring into Indesign to set up my pages and add my images to. I'm finding that even though I'm fairly experienced I have no idea what I am doing here and I'm hoping that somebody would be really patient with me and help me to shove off the dock and get rowing so I can learn and teach myself. Would somebody take a few minutes and help me to set up what I need to place these articles-3 so far about 25 pages each to a chapter into Indesign Cs4 so that I can set up my basic page and add the images?

I'm finding that it just piled all of the text onto one giant page and I did not get 25 pages but only 1. I know this is a pain but the best source sometimes is to go the experts and get immersed to learn quicker. Can anybody offer me a basic tutorial help outline that will allow me to set up my text from word 2007 into the program so I can started experimenting and searching the web for tips and tricks?

I'd be very much obliged with some assistance,

      Vic

Well, how can I say this in a kind way, this is REALLY basic and I think you should try first and look in the Help file provided with your application, then on some sort of tutorial that you can find everywhere on the net and THEN post for help in a forum.

      Anyway, the concept is:

you create a model for your pages, so called Master Page, then import your text, place it in the first page and then, if there is some text not fitting you will see a little red plus sign in the lower right corner of your text frame. You have to click on that, “load” the cursor with all the overset text and place it in a new page, based on the Master page you've prepared at the beginning. You can do this in an automatic way, look for “text flow” “automatic text flow” in your help file.

I've just typed “indesign” in the search field of https://www.youtube.com and here you can find the result…

C'mon, try, you'll learn much more if you discover by yourself, at least, this is my opinion.

      Good luck

I think you should go and purchase this https://www.amazon.com/InDesign…..0321573579

It will really help you. When you get to the more advanced stage of indesign I suggest you look at getting Real World InDesign.

Adobe Indesign, as much as its faithful users love it, is not an easy piece of software to learn if the only software being used prior to that is word processing software. Indesign is Layout software just like Quark, Ventura or Framemaker, and there are many concepts which most of these programs share which have to be understood first before the software makes sense.

The forums are here to help but i'd say that hands-on training would be more valuable. I say this as that's how I learnt Layout software and i came from a clerical background. Its well worth investing the time in the training.

Yeh I agree, I think you should do a local search for courses into InDesign, most are two day crash courses. But I still recommend having a book at your desk for those hairy moments where you need to find how to do something fast.

By all means, the forums are here if you're really stuck, but the original question asked is basically a book in itself, to be honest.

Excellent ideas all. The gensis of this project is to provide some of the students at the school I work at a base in some sort of layout on projects thay are putting together. I'll look for some tutorials and for some help outside of the forums and if I get stuck come back and look to get the specific answers I need. I knew it was a big task and I'll get it done. Thanks for the tips to get started.
