      Hi,

When working with product catalogs, I use numbers inside bullets to link the picture to the text. In CS3, I used a list trick for adding numbers fast (just opt+drag the box and a new number appears), using anchored objects for the “graphic”.

But it seems the anchored objects feature has changed in CS4, now the anchored object appears in front of the text, not behind.

How can I achieve this in CS4?!

I've attached an inx file showing the problem. Works in cs3, not i cs4. (link: https://is.gd/4UQWh )

      Thanks for the help! :)

The stacking order of anchored objects did not change between 3 and 4; they still appear “in back” of text in the frame.

I just think something when glitchy with your frames. I was able to recreate the effect (very clever!) in CS4 … I'm still using your character style for the number but my own paragraph style. Here's a CS4 snippet you can download: https://bit.ly/25GhwD

Let me know if that works for you.

      Thanks for the quick response!

It didn't do the trick unfortunately. I need the bullet to be filled so I can place it on top of a picture. If I fill the circle it apears on top of the number…

Ah yes, you're right. Hmmph. Maybe it's the autonumbers/bullets that have been tweaked between CS3 and CS4.

I was able to get the same final effect in CS4 by filling the circle with Paper as before, and then from the Effects panel, setting the circle's Fill to the Hue blend mode. Assuming the type is black, that keeps the circle white regardless of the underlying pixels.

      Does that work for you?

As memory serves, in the stacking order of anchoring base and anchored object, the anchored object was always in front of the anchoring base object.

To get the combination to work, you'll need to anchor the number frame to the graphic bullet, which means converting the graphic shape to a text frame, then anchor the number frame to it.

I've been using a similar method (with the list trick) to quickly place reference numbers on drawings and marking waypoints on maps and charts, except instead of anchoring the bullet to the number (or vice verse), I simply group them together.

There's another method to produce the bullet using a dotted paragraph rule, but it involves creating a custom line style and is only good for round bullets. Here's a link to a CS4 snippet of it.
