This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 26

Need something to read? A movie to watch? Fill your head with these great early-April InDesign and publishing links!

In case you’ve been living under a rock: InDesign CS5 will be announced next week. (Adobe calls it “launching,” though to me, that implies shipping, which will come later.) There is all kinds of talk about CS5 and what it will have. If you haven’t read our Big Scoop from yesterday (April 1), please check it out here.

But until Adobe lets the cat out of the bag (or some other less unpleasant imagery), we have plenty of other things to talk about and read:

  • Mike Rankin wrote what I consider to be one of the best overviews of the iPad to date, and he wrote it before pretty  much anyone even had one or the reviews came out! Another very funny (and more InDesign-related) “post” from Mike is this funny image that he tweeted… to paraphrase:  “you know it’s time to go to bed when grep starts to look like emoticons”)
  • If you’re still curious about Quark, what happened to them, and what they’re up to, this Inc. magazine article is very interesting.
  • Again, not much to do with InDesign, but I really enjoyed this little Typographic Safari by Jim Felici!
  • On the eBook front, I keep being hit by new realizations about how the future (well, today, really) is different than the past. Here’s a good article in the NYTimes about how you can’t see the book covers people are reading anymore.
  • I love this photograph of “Photoshop” on Flickr. I wish someone did one of these for InDesign!
  • You’re an artist and you want to make a cool PDF portfolio of your work. Go directly to this InDiscripts post to check out one cool solution!
  • I am very impressed with what MOO.com has created since it turned into a great print site about 4 years ago. But I’m even more impressed with what people are doing with the stuff they create at moo. You must check out this interactive book! Full-screen is best.
  • The problem with ePub is that there are different flavors and each supports different CSS and media options. For example, Adobe Digital Editions clearly supports Flash, though the iPad/iPhone does not. But check out this cool rich media ePub document in Digital Editions and you’ll see why I wish Flash were an option on the iPad.
  • Like Type and Typography? This is a fun Sand Alphabet movie. I’m going to head into Seattle to see that student show! Too bad it won’t still be up during the PeP conference.
  • Keith Gilbert points to some fascinating statistics on OpenType fonts (vis a vis sales of TrueType and PostScript). Wow, we might be in the 21st century after all!

In fact, I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more from Mr. Gilbert any day now… not only is he a speaker at the conference, but he’s joining us as a new contributor at InDesignSecrets.com! W00t, as they say.
