The cross reference is not a standard text variable like Running Header or Chapter Number, but a kind of updating Hyperlink.

Please note that the cross-reference feature was only added in CS4, so if you use an earlier version, you will not find it.

To setup a cross reference, you need to display the Cross-References panel (which is also the Hyperlinks panel). Now place your cursor at the point where you'd like to add the reference and use the panel menu or buttons to add a new cross-reference.

In the options dialog, set the Destination document and from the list of paragraph styles select the style of the target text, then select the specific paragraph from the list. For example, if you'd like to point to the table title on another page of the current document, select it in the Document list, then select the paragraph style used for the title, then select the title of that specific table from the list.

Next, set the cross-reference format by selecting one from the predefined list or by clicking the pencil icon to the right and setting your custom format.

At the end, set how the cross-reference will appear when you generate an interactive PDF with hyperlinks.
