      Hello folks,

I would like to get some general feedback with regards to how I am approaching creating my book using ID, Ai & Ps.

I created a 64 page book layout in Ai using the artboards and then set about using both Ai and Ps to create my image content for each page.

Images that I created or manipulated in Ps have all been placed into the my final Ai working file and converted to vector images so that every bit of artwork inside my working Ai file is now vector based artwork. I did this so that I can rescale the page sizes at a later date if I should need to without having to be concerned about losing image quality–I also wanted to keep everything vector since Ai was my main image work base.

I am now at the stage at which I am working between Ai and ID. I have had a few strange (to me at least) copy and paste results.

One image that I copied and pasted from Ai into ID created a dash lined boundary box containing no image. I rasterized the image in Ai and was then able to copy and paste it (Ai to ID) with no problem. Can anyone please tell me what might have been going on here?

This little mishap got me to thinking that maybe I could make a duplicate of my finished Ai layout file, rasterize each image/page layout and then copy and paste each page into its ID page location. Is this a logical practice or am I way off the mark here? Would I be better saving each art board as a separate file and then use File-Place in ID to get the artwork onto my pages?

Im also wondering what will happen with images/artwork that have different opacity settings. Will these remain between moving images from Ai to ID and then finally to print?

I know this is a big ask of info. I am also reading forums to get up to speed but I thought it couldn’t hurt to put my questions out there.

Basically, I am pretty new to ID and this is my biggest image heavy project so far. I would like to see if my brain is lined up with a method of good working practice between Ai and ID … and if not, how should I be approaching it?

A big thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out… and a drink if you are ever passing through The Hague.. ;)

Saul, I am wondering why you are copying and pasting between Ai and ID. Surely it would make more sense to use the Place command? At least that way you keep your ID file size smaller, you can always use the Links panel to go back directly to Ai to make any editting you might consider necessary and it might mean your problem with the dashed line boundary and no image was avoided.
I would consider rasterising each image/page layout unnecessary toil when simply using the ?Show Import Options? button in the Place dialog allows you to import and place each pasteboard (page) separately. And keeping the images as vector images does, as you say, allow you much more flexibility for any future page resizes. Rasterizing loses that advantage.
