So here’s my problem…i have a lengthy indesign manuscript in which the first line of each paragraph has been incorrectly indented with a double em space instead of using the first line indent from the paragraph panel. Also the em space is local formatting and has not been applied as part of the paragraph style used…so apart from me going through every single paragraph and manually replacing the double em space with the first line paragraph indent…can any of you really brainy folk kindly tell me how to use indesign’s find/change feature to achieve this quickly…the find/change dialogue box allows me to find the double em spacing easily but how do i achieve the first line paragraph indent in the ‘change to’ menu, since i don’t see that option available?

Put in the fiend field the double em space, leave the change field blank, below you see two boxes (find format and change format), the top one is for the find field, so leave it blank, the second one (change format) will let you add the para style needed, so fill in the para style by clicking on the “T” at the right top side.

Thanks, but if i create a new paragraph style with a first line indent, then the find/change procedure outlined by you doesn’t replace the em spacing with the first line indent, it only adds the indent to them since the em spaces were originally inserted outside of the text’s paragraph styling

Indeed, after a little test, this seems to work:
First, create a character style with as “basic character format” only filled in size=0.1 pt and give it a name.
In the field leave the double em and put in the change field a “normal blank”.
In the “change format” put your paragraph style and your newly created char style.
This way, the double em is replaced by a blank with a length of 0.1 point.

Many, many thanks to you Gert…that worked! :-) …you saved me many excruciating hours of manual formatting….see i knew it – you guys are very brainy, coz I could never have come up with that…much much appreciated @ your time, effort and extremely helpful input!
