This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 104
A big pile o' tips, links, and article for you to jump into!
As we slide into the end of February, only one thing is for certain: We all have more to learn about InDesign! It’s a never-ending journey.
- Why would you want to use Data Merge instead of XML (or vice versa)? Check out this good article outlining some reasons by Loïc Aigon (in English!).
- Loic has also written a CS extension called AsciiMe that lets you turn any InDesign object into ASCII Art.
- Here’s a nice movie about merging frames together so that one image appears to show up in several frames.
- Interested in snippets and manipulating their code? Here’s a new open source project called Live Snippets which looks kind of interesting. He wants feedback!
- Learn about some scripts you already have with this video from Jeff Witchel
- Bob Levine wrote an insightful article called “What Will it Take to Move Everyone to Creative Cloud?“
- Fonts + science = fascinating! This New Scientist article discusses some of the research that has gone on around choosing a font. (I think you need a free membership to read it?) Some of the conclusions are surprising!
- Here’s more on fonts: If you love fonts and are considering making your own, you should check out Crafting Type. They have workshops in Chicago (March 8-10) and Portland, Oregon (March 15-17).
- If you were considering using Woodwing’s SmartDPS tool for your app-creating pleasure, consider no longer. They’ve discontinued development on it. I believe these tools will still be available for people using Woodwing’s larger workflow system, though.
- Kevin Stohlmeyer wrote a nice piece in Adobe’s Inspire magazine on creating alternate layouts for multiple-sized tablet devices.
- Our friends and colleagues Bob Levine and Scott Citron have joined up to create a new tablet-app creation company called Tabulous. When experts like these team up, great things happen!
- Gene Gable has been writing his Scanning Around with Gene article for a decade. Sadly, he’s retiring that? at least until we can convince him to come back!
Enjoy!
