Sample: I work in document with Bahasa Indonesia, then I want to change all english words in my document from normal to italic font format.

      F: [A-Za-z]+
      C: your style (presumably italic)

Thank You Steve for your advice. But with your expression, its not work, because when I click find next, all words selected not only foreign language. Meanwhile what I want is the expression GREP only find the foreign language (out of default language). Let say, I use Bahasa Indonesia as a default language, then all out of default language should be change to italic.

      Try this:
      in Find: \<[^\r[:lo:]]+
      in Change: Italic

Depending on how the document was made, you MIGHT? be able to use the normal Find/Change to do this.
      If you search using:
      Find Format:
      Advanced Character Formats
      Language: Try the English Options
You might be able to select the english text.

You could then just enter an Italic Character style in the change Format

This worked for me in one document which had P??i words that I needed to italicize. It was a bit crazy, because InDesign had labelled them as ar-SA (arabic!!!)

Hi Jim, thanks for your advice. It works! But in this case I have to change the language format first before find the text then change to italic. Not automatically find text out of default language. So actually I want to change all the text using foreign language (Out of Default Language) change to italic format. Thanks
Btw, can InDesign detect foreign language? Usually, when we spell check, a red line will appear if the word or sentence does not use the default language. So actually, I want to change all the text with red line to be italic format.

In Publishing industry, usually have a procedure in editorial department to change all the text using foreign language change to italic format, so the reader should know that the words or sentences its not the default language. Notes: language its not the other character than latin character (e.g., accented characters, characters from other scripts like Cyrillic, Chinese, etc.). So I hope Adobe can develope InDesign could be make it easier to find/change all the text that using foreign language/ other language than default language. Thank You.

This is strange because I think you posted about this 10 years ago and got many answers.
Here is a good blog post for you:

Search for Foreign Language Characters in Text

    • #14403721

Hi David, thanks to remind me about my topic 10 years ago. But I would like to tell you that all topics only find or search foreign language character, meanwhile I want to know the way to find/change the foreign language (not foreign language characters) with the latin character such as english, french, germany language, because my default language is Indonesian.
David, if you don’t mind, please to showing me how to find/change any language besides Indonesian language in my long document. Thank you for your kindness.

Unfortunately, InDesign is not very smart. It does not understand the words or the language. It can only find types of characters, using GREP.

For example, if I write “hola amigo” and “hello friend” then InDesign has no way to understand that the first one is Spanish and the second one is English. They are all just “latin” characters.

So you can find “Chinese characters” or “Hebrew characters” but that is all. If your Indonesian is written using latin characters, then InDesign has no way to tell what is what.

Very Clear! Thank you so much, Guru…so I have to find a way to make it easier how to find/change the foreign language in my document.
In this case, suggest from Jim Swift is very acceptable to me. Thanks Jim..thanks a lot!
Thanks to Steve Davis and Dhafir Photo also. Thanks for your advice.
