Ok … I built a paperback cover in InDeisgn … uploaded it to Amazon. Everything seemed fine until the first customer who purchased the book emailed me. “The subtitle is missing from the front cover, but it appears in the graphic on the website.” I forget what I did, but problem fixed, sent the customer a replacement copy.

Today, I’m creating a paperback cover and wanted to email a proof to a client. The LARGE title on the front cover disappeared! It was present in the PDF, but not the 96 ppi jpg. The title was typed using Fields of Cathy font … saved as outlines … I applied a 60% yellow color. Since the title on the other book was the same color, I changed this title to white and (voila!) it appears in the jpg.

When I applied the 60% yellow again, it doesn’t appear as 96 ppi (web or proof resolution) … not at 300 dpi … not at 600 dpi … It appears in the Press Quality PDF.

However, the first book with this problem was a PDF … the subtitle would not print until I saved the cover as a JPG.

So, saving as a PDF for one cover and a JPG for the other put a Band-Aid (TM) on the problem, but I need to understand why my titles of subtitles vanish so I can avoid this problem altogether in the future. Could it be a transparency issue? Or perhaps an RGB issue?

without seeing a visual, it is extremely difficult to give any opinion. What were you using for KDP?

InDesign … Photoshop … Sometimes Illustrator … Stuff saved as PDF … Gotta make certain everything is CMYK for print …

Is it possible the yellow color is a spot color, rather than set to Process? Also, when you export the JPG, try turning on “Simulate Overprint.”

Here’s the specs on the color …

      C = 0 M = 0 Y = 60 K = 0

I thought that would be alright, but spot color for a logo or text is bad?

      I’ll try “simulate overprint.”

I pulled up the “separations preview” flyout menu. The logo is visible when the preview is “off” … the moment I select “separations,” the title disappears. The outlines are there, when rolling the cursor over the space, but selecting the separations preview removes the color.

When I apply values like C 100 M 90 Y 10 K 0, the result is a bluish logo that successfully imports to a JPEG. Also checked “embed color profile” and “simulate overprint.”

When I switch back to C 0 M 0 Y 60 K 0, the type vanishes in the JPG. So, is that the solution? C 01 M 01 Y 60 K 01 to simulate the pale yellow color, thus creating the separations it desires?

In “separations preview,” the yellow type vanishes, but the bluish type seems to get darker.

Oh, and the color has “process” selected, NOT “spot.”

      More questions:
When the text is set to yellow, if you choose View > Overprint Preview, does the yellow disappear?
What is the yellow text on top of? Some color? If you remove that background, does the yellow stick around?
Are there any transparency effects applied to that text frame in the Effects panel?
What is File > Transparency Blend Mode set to (RGB or CMYK)?

The text disappeared in Overprint Preview. Behind it is a photoshop graphic (a cover painting) saved as CMYK (although RGB made no difference). There are no transparency effects applied, or anything else. Transparency blend is set to CMYK.

The only thing that made a difference was removing the OUTLINES and typing the logo again. The time I placed editable text with the same yellow tint, and it does NOT disappear in Overprint Preview. So, I suppose the answer is: I can’t use outlined text?

Outlined Text has been one of the oldest tools in my arsenal. Outline it, stretch it, resize it, no problem! Until now. I suppose I’ll have to type everything in Illustrator, or just use plain text with InDesign.

I don’t know if that makes sense, but have you tried to put the outlined text on a separat layer?

Well, you don’t have to outline text to stretch it, resize it, etc. You can even stroke editable text and set the fill to None color.

But in this case, I think there’s simply something wrong with that object. I don’t know what it is — maybe some kind of corruption — but you absolutely should be able to convert it to outlines, apply a color, and have it work.

If you delete the old one, and put a NEW text frame with editable text over it, and set it to yellow… and then convert it to outlines (if you want)… does it work now?

Okay …In “Overprint preview,” the outlined text vanishes.

However, if I type the text and don’t outline it, it stays visible in overprint preview.

Also, if I type the text in Adobe Illustrator and import it, text stays visible in overprint preview.

Not certain why this is an issue, but I’ll avoid outlining text if need be.

The only thing I can think of is that when you convert to outlines, the Overprint Fill option turns on in the Window > Output > Attributes panel. Can you look there to see if it’s set to overprint for some weird reason?
