Character Style changes Font Family Name (Bug)

      Hello everyone,

I’ve encountered an interesting bug and want to check with you folks and make sure it isn’t something either known or it’s just something happening with my version of InDesign:

      How to reproduce:
      1. Create a new Character Style and only set Font Style Bold (or italic, bold italic and I suspect any style you want)
      2. Put some placeholder text in Times New Roman, Minion (or I suspect any Family you wish). Let’s take Times New Roman.
      3. Apply said Character Style.

Taking as an example Times New Roman and the Bold Character Style, you will notice that after applying the Character Style, the Font Family name is changed to ‘Times New Roman Bold’ instead of ‘Times New Roman’.

Because of this ‘new, mutant family’, using Find/Change to search for Times New Roman (Bold or not) will yield 0 results. You can’t search for ‘Times New Roman Bold’ either, since it doesn’t appear in brackets or some other way they do when there are missing fonts or font errors. I also do not know what implications it might have when sharing files.

      Workaround/Fix:

I managed to find a fix for the problem: When creating the character style, besides the Font Style also mention the Font Family. After you input both and click elsewhere so it registers, you can then delete the Font Family and save. This will make the Character Style behave as it should.

Can anyone reproduce this odd bug? I’m using the latest InDesign version, 15.0.2.

      Thanks!

I think you are correct, and not correct. :-)

You are correct that applying the character style creates a strange name in the Font field, like “Times New Roman Bold”
That is very strange! I don’t know if it has always been that way, or if that is a new bug.

But when I try searching with Find/Change, I can find the font. I’m not sure what the problem there is for you. I suggest checking the Find/Change dialog box very closely; maybe there is some setting that is wrong?

Hi David, thank you very much for replying and thank you for everything you do for the InDesign community.

I am almost positive that this didn’t happen in InDesign v.14, at least.

I retested the Find/Change issue and it seems you are half and half too :D, but that’s because of me, I should’ve been more exact when describing the test.

If you search ONLY for the Font Family, it does find it. But, if you search for the Font Family AND Font Style, in our case Times New Roman, Bold, it won’t find those words that have the Character Style applied to, as if there isn’t any bold text anywhere.

You can see how this poses a lot of problems when you are trying to find some specific problems or text that you want to find, etc. so I’m extremely surprised I didn’t find this problem posted anywhere.

      Stay safe!

Thank you for your kind words, Alexandro.

OK, now I see: You are 100% correct! :-)

This must be a bug. I filed it here (please vote on it):

Will do! Thank you for submitting it. Maybe your gravitas will convince the engineers to bump it up the backlog.
