We just upgraded to CC2019 yesterday. Today, when I try to change text in the footer box of my template (and some other text boxes/table cells), the text is suddenly too tall and I get overset text indicators. This is true even if I type a space in the footer box or simply cut the text that’s currently in the footer and paste it back in the same place. There are four of us using the same templates and sharing the same files; this issue is only happening with two of us. I feel like it must be a setting, but I can’t figure out what it would be. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

The fact that it’s happening to only some of you is particularly mysterious. If you export to IDML and open that IDML file, does the problem go away?

No. :-( In fact, in the IDML file, most of the text boxes now have overset text (without me typing anything in them).

That’s actually helpful to learn! That means that it may have something to do with how InDesign’s text flow rules have changed over time. If you open the old template and press command-shift-/ (slash) does the text become overset? My guess is that it does, even without you typing anything.

Are all four of you using the same version of CC 2019? If so, the fact that two of you are getting the problem is pretty weird…

I’m sure three of us are on the same version (the 4th is remote — I’ve asked her to let me know); the three of us in the office are running High Sierra, whereas the remote person is running Mojave.

The text does become overset (with option-command-/). I checked my Type and Advanced Type preferences against those of one of my coworkers; she didn’t have drag-and-drop in layout enabled, but otherwise everything is identical.

Situation like this are why I am such an ardent supporter of style sheets, fixing this rather strange issue would be a breeze with the proper style sheet configurations.

I am wondering, did you also upgrade your computer? If so, this could be a slight difference between versions of fonts between systems.

No computer upgrades. The current templates are based on templates developed in house probably 15 years ago (many years before I started here) and updated along the way; these footer boxes have been in use since our most recent redesign, which was more than 4 years ago, without issue — and we’ve always been able to open/work on/save each other’s files without font issues. (We do hope to start from scratch later this year to build more robust templates, but we’ve never had a breakdown like this before.) It’s as if my text is suddenly too tall for the box (even if I cut the current text and place it in the same place). The only thing that has changed is upgrading to CC2019 yesterday.

Adobe does actually change the way it flows text every so often… sometimes it’s a difference in hyphenation (you could check Preferences > Dictionary). Sometimes it’s just a way it handles metrics. It’s rare, but if these templates were made 10+ years ago, then it’s not entirely surprising.

Usually InDesign will not reflow text unless: you edit it in some way, you export and import IDML, or you use that keyboard shortcut.

So this is a situation where, if you need to edit the text, you’re going to need to update the formatting and re-save a new template.

It is also possible that it is a font issue. (For example, open Type > Find Font, click More Info, and choose the font in the list. Look at the Version field in particular, and compare between the computers.)

It WAS the fonts — phew!! One of the two fonts used in the footer was a different version (two versions were loaded, and the computer was choosing the older version). I’ve resolved the duplicate font issues and restarted InDesign — we’re back in business. Thank you so much!!
