Massive png files inside a linked Word file

Hi – digging around I find that png files placed in Word import at the wrong size (massive)
The issue seems to have been explained in an article I found …

The size in pixels per inch of an image is determined by its metadata. A 1000×1000 pixel image can be 300 ppi or 72 ppi or even 2 ppi and it will still be the same 1000×1000 pixels in size. The only difference is the number hidden in the internal metatdata of the image. PNG, however, does not contain any ppi information (it also contains no color profile information, which can land you in trouble if you need color accuracy).

Aside from re-saving as jpg can anybody think of a way of correcting the import process?

A TIFF, with LZW compression, can be fairly small. Or, link, instead of import.

      Thanks Tim –

However, it’s the size on the layout rather than file size

Linking or importing produces the same result – massive PNG files throwing the layout out

I can manually adjust sizes, but I’ll be dealing with potentially thousands of these files so need a way of (preferably) linking the Word document on import, but the PNG files coming in at their original dimensions

      Any suggestions on that one?

Interestingly (or not), I’ve been in dialogue with the guy who writes the InData plugins and he has the same issue

His plugin which dynamically links a Google Doc where the Word file has been uploaded to Google Docs imports correctly, whereas the same document as a Word file generates these massive PNG dimensions within InDesign?

It would seem one solution is the same thing: Replace the PNGs in Word with TIFFs, but with thousands of files I have to admit that I have not used InData and if the developer doesn’t know the fix for Word, maybe you’ll have to use Google Docs. Sorry I can’t help further.

      Yup – I like the fact that Word.docx is a zip file…
I can unzip the word file to give me all the graphics where I can run a Photoshop action

However… can you (or anybody) think of a way of adjusting the frames for the graphics to fit the re-imported TIFF or JPG once they’re re-linked?

That way I’d have a head start with the layout adjustment (currently graphic frames are being overlaid or extending beyond page edges)

i.e. some kind of Graphic Style on import/link of the Word doc?
