Changing QR-Code makes them unreadable for some apps

Holy hell, the QR-codes are making me suicidal … who even uses this stuff irl? Anyway, here is what’s driving me crazy:

A client requested to have QR-codes containing a vCard printed on their business cards. I’ve generated a csv-file with the contact data formatted in an xml-format, that can be interpreted as a v-card and used data merge to generate the codes. Worked fine.

Now I have to change a phone number here or an e-mail address there. Make one or two new cards – the usual stuff. Since the changes were minor, I didn’t bother to make a new csv and generate the codes all over again, I changed the data manually via “edit QR-code…”.

When checking with a couple of reader apps, I realized, that suddenly the code didn’t work anymore – at least on some of them. Even after I changed it back (manually, not “undo”), the code didn’t work anymore. It even looked differently although it contained the exact same information (I verified that with the readers it still worked on).

Did Adobe change the qr-code generating magic in the last 6 months?

I haven’t heard of any changes, but that does sound really weird. These are QR codes made with data merge? If you make them manually (from nothing) do they work okay?
