Typographics: A Conference for People Who Use Type
Type enthusiasts take note: Typographics, a conference for people who use type, is scheduled for this June 8 to 18 in New York City. Typographics is a conference devoted to contemporary typography, with talks, workshops, and tours focusing on where typography is today and where its future may lie. It will be held at Cooper Union in New York City as a combined effort of Type@Cooper and the Herb Lubalin Study Center.

The main forum of the conference will be held on June 12 and 13. It will consist of presentations about graphic design, web design, publication design, book design, type design, packaging, branding, corporate identity, advertising, and motion graphics, as well as new frontiers in app and responsive web design. The international line-up of speakers currently includes Barbara Glauber/Heavy Meta, Jackie Goldberg/Yahoo!, Bruno Maag/Dalton Maag, Erik van Blokland/LettError, Jonathan Hoefler/Hoefler & Co., Abbott Miller/Pentagram, Adrian Shaughnessy/Unit Editions, Roger Black/Font Bureau, Matteo Bologna/Mucca Design, and Bethany Heck/Microsoft.
In the four days preceding and following the main conference (June 8 to 11 and June 15 to 18), Type@Cooper is offering workshops and tours which will be open to both participants and the public. The announced workshops so far include:

- Sign Painting, John Downer
- Letter Puzzles, Alex Trochut
- Scripting RoboFont with Python, Just van Rossum
- Copperplate Writing, Elinor A. Holland
- Found Lettering, Ken Barber
- Draw Vector Move, Erik van Blokland
- Python Programming with DrawBot for Beginners, Just van Rossum
Most of the Typographics programming will take place at Cooper Union in the East Village neighborhood of New York City. This is one of the liveliest and hippest neighborhoods in Manhattan. Founded as a tuition-free college by philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, the school is the alma mater of many noteworthy typographers and lettering artists including Herb Lubalin, Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, and Lou Dorfsman.

On the evening of Friday, June 12, a party is scheduled at the Astor Center in the historic De Vinne Press Building at 399 Lafayette Street. The De Vinne Press is historically relevant to the theme of Typographics, as the building was constructed in 1885–86 to house the printing and typographic facilities of Theodore Low De Vinne & Co. which at one time employed more than three hundred people.
The conference is made possible with the help of the sponsorship of groups including Type Directors Club (TDC), Art Directors Club (ADC), American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Society of Print Design (SPD), and Society of Newspaper Designers (SND).

I never see notifications of these types of conferences in Canada. Do they not exist here or is the United States just more pro-active with design education?
