The Instamatic 2014—Cool Concept Camera or Fashionable Fraud?

Recently, a new gadget appeared on the scene combining the retro cool of a Kodak Instamatic camera with the modern capabilities of an Android smartphone. It’s called the Instamatic 2014, and no doubt, it will have a certain segment of hipsters worked up into a frenzy, with its old school styling, impressive specs, low price, and slickly-produced video.

There’s just one little problem. It’s probably not real. According to slashgear.com, the website, blog, and YouTube video for the Instamatic 2014 are part of an “elaborate ruse” with no real connection to Kodak. The website is registered not by Kodak, but supposedly by a football player from the Czech Republic. And the YouTube video was posted to a new account with no connection to Kodak either.

If it were real, the Instamatic 2014 might be a pretty nifty product, sporting a 14 MP camera and a 4″ touch screen in the basic model (for $249), and a 16 MP camera/5″ touchscreen/full HD video in the top end model (for $349).

Time will tell if this is a merely prank, some guerilla marketing by Kodak or others, or a real product in development. In the meantime, stay tuned and enjoy the pretty pictures.
