SkyFonts, the cloud-based font rental service by Monotype Imaging has been officially released. Through the service, you can browse a collection of over 8000 fonts, and try them for free for five minutes with no restrictions. After that, you can pay to keep access and use the fonts in your work. You only need to pay for fonts as long as you intend to use them, from a day to a month at a time.

To explore SkyFonts, you can sign up for a free trial and automatically receive 10 credits to try out the service. Ten credits with allow you to rent 10 fonts for a one day, or three fonts for 30 days. SkyFonts credits packs can be purchased for as little as $45 for 15 credits. Discounts are offered for larger volume credit purchases.

Also coming soon are two additional enhancements to the service, a SkyFonts iPad app and the Adobe CS SkyFonts Extension. The app will be free and allow users to browse fonts by name, foundry, or visual characteristics and rent those fonts directly from their iPads. The extension will offer similiar capabilities directly within Creative Suite applications like InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, giving users the chance to save time and effort by renting fonts with a simple click.

Fonts need to get licensed the same way as images. They are software, but they are a a creative expression designers chose for brands. The current business model for fonts doesn’t allow for this. I can pay a photographer for global or regional usage, by medium, for a specified period, but my font options are these horrible subscriptions or licensing software ‘forever’ and not being able to share the work I create no matter however I pay for it!
