Pantone Gets 336-Shades More Colorful

Feeling dazzled by color? It’s not just the colors of spring flowers that are distracting. It’s also the introduction of 336 new Pantone colors. The new shades are part of the Pantone Plus Series, the second-generation color guides that replaced the traditional PMS colors in 2010. The original colors were retained, but new shades were added to work in more contemporary situations.
The 336 additional colors bring the number of colors in the Pantone Plus Series to 1, 677 swatches.
According to Pantone, the new shades extend the color palettes of existing colors, adding “a wider variety of values, saturation and undertones.” The breadth of the new colors were influenced by Pantone’s Goe system. Introduced in 2007, the Goe system uses new inks that yield a deeper well of colors that had previously been untapped
The new 336 colors can be added to existing books as a supplement and will be included in all new Plus Series books going forward. Because of the number of variables — Pantone product line, size of swatch book, type of paper, etc. — the pricing of the new colors varies wildly. See the Pantone site for more information.
Color Bridge books, which include formulae for both print and onscreen work, will be available in June. All others are available now.

Last month, Pantone introduced PantoneLIVE, a cloud-based service for managing color branding online. It helps companies and designers ensure that the correct colors are being used in a consistent way.
PantoneLIVE was cited as one of the technologies offered by Pantone that interested Danaher in buying X-Rite, the parent company of Pantone. X-Rite — and that includes Pantone — will operate as a stand-alone company upon closing of the deal.
