Mount July Camera Filters Take the Instagram Look to the Next Level (and into Real Life)

When digital designs imitate real life we sometimes label it “skeuomorphism,” but what do you call it when real-life objects are inspired by a digital aesthetic like the Instagram look? How about “awesome”? At least that seems to be the verdict on Kickstarter, as a project to create a line of color-splashed camera filters called Mount July is off to a rousing start.

The project is the brainchild of Olivia Vagelos and Martin Bush, two Bay Area designers who met at Stanford University, “building crazy colorful things.” The Mount July filters will be the first multi-colored, radially-graduated filters built for universal use. The filters fit onto Canon Rebel and Nikon D standard lenses (or any other camera with a 58 or 52 mm lens). You can use them for video and analog cameras too.

And since you will be able to stack and rotate them independently, the Mount July filters will open up a much broader range of creative possibilities than the pre-packaged digital filters of Instagram and other photo apps. You’re meant to play with these filters, and use them to experiment and invent new looks.

The Kickstarter project runs until Wednesday Jun 12, by which time the goal is to raise at least $32,000 for tooling and first-round production.
