The CreativePro Weekly Top 10, vol. 5

1. Do you love a typeface so much that you’d cover a wall in your home with it? At plainasdave.com you can read about one man’s project to create a mural using Adobe Garamond Pro and some text from a classic novel.

2. If hand painting a wall’s worth of Garamond is a bit too much for you, then maybe one of the ideas on decorating with type at Apartment Therapy might be more the thing.

3. Of course, there’s looking at type, and then there’s living and working in it. The kind of thing you’d experience if your office featured the letter-shaped desks in the Fold Yard project by French designer Benoit Challand. If anyone needs me, I’ll be taking a nap in capital D.

4. And what kind of a week would it be without another, “What Are You” quiz? This time, Design Taxi delivers the goods with a useful infographic Which Designer Are You? to help diagnose your traits, strengths, and weaknesses as a creative pro.

5. Getty made a big splash this week, annoucing that they would open up 35 million images to free, non-commercial use. The catch? The images must be embedded so that Getty retains the ability to track, edit, and delete them at any time. So in exchange for the free photo, you’re allowing Getty to gather analytics, to place ads or other content along with (or instead of the photo), and to potentially leave holes where the images used to be if they decide to remove them. Still, sometimes you just gotta have an image of a platypus sitting at a table.

6. Set the Way-Back mchine for the year 1957. Revolutionary ideas are everywhere. Sputnik is launched. Elvis invents twerking. Dr. Seuss puts a cat in a hat. And two guys in Switzerland come up with a typeface that will eventually be known as Helvetica, and rest is history. But Helvetica’s history didn’t really begin in 1957. In To Helvetica and Back, the Type Desk has a fascinating look at the typefaces that inspired Helvetica, some of which date back to the late 1880s.

7. Give you one guess what you’ll find at giantcursor.com. And if you ever figure out how to click that button, let me know what it does!

8. Do you ever have trouble getting perfectly straight photos with your phone? Of course you can fix them in Photoshop, or you could take them straight in the first place, with the help of an app called Orient that auto-aligns your photos, so you can hold the camera at any angle and still get it right. Perfect for helping you avoid taking skewed selfies after too many milk and cookie shots.

9. Need some new fonts? Want ’em for free? Design Roast has a nice round-up of 7 Places to Find Free Commercial Use Fonts.

10. Pixel Furniture might sound like the name of a band in a Portlandia sketch. But actually, it’s an inspired idea by Studio Badini Createam to combine the beautiful vector-like curves of classic French furniture with low res pixel art. Me? I’m more of a pixel couch kind of guy.

Mike, thanks so much for including Design Roast in your roundup! I LOVE those letter desks, but I’m not sure how practical they would be. And I’m loving the Garamond mural and Apartment Therapy inspiration! Not sure I’m so devoted to any one font that I’d handpaint a wall with it… but then again, I prefer a little more variety. xD
