Free High Resolution Art From the Getty Museum

2

Sure, we all love free fonts, but what if you’re in the market for something a little more…artsy? How’s a free Van Gogh grab you? Right now, you can download a high res version of Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises for the low, low price of free. And when I say high res, I mean it. It’s a 12 MP image with unbelievable detail, much like the ones we saw recently from the Google Art Project, but even better, because you can download and use this image for any purpose, including commercial work.

Mmm, you can almost smell the flowers.

The Van Gogh image and about 4700 others are part of the Getty Museum’s new Open Content Program, which includes images of paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, decorative arts and more.

Browse around and you’ll see Civil War era photos, drawings by da Vinci, Monets, and much more, all free for the taking. Enjoy!

  • Al Shultz says:

Mike, it really would be great if all that art could be used for free for commercial purposes — but it can’t. See the Getty Terms of use where it says, “(3) Downloading Site Content for commercial use is prohibited.” (www.getty.edu/legal/copyright.html).

I’d love to be proven wrong on that point, but they seem to be pretty clear on the issue.

  • Mike Rankin says:

    Hi Al-

In the FAQ of the Open Content Program it explicitly states that all of these images can be used for commercial purposes.

    Here’s the URL: https://www.getty.edu/about/opencontentfaq.html

    And the relevant question:

Are images made available through the Getty’s Open Content Program approved for commercial use? I’d like to use one for my company’s website/product/brochure.

Yes. However, please do not suggest or imply that the Getty endorses, approves of, or participated in your company, product, service, or project.
