11

If you’re into making templates and themes—for documents, websites, presentations, or social media—you might wonder where to sell them. Whether you’re hoping to make a little extra cash with ideas that didn’t make the client cut, or you’re designing with the purpose of selling the end product, check out the list below to find a marketplace that fits with your goals and commitment level.

Theme Forest lets you sell your web templates for WordPress, Tumblr, Adobe Muse, and more and gives you 33%–70% of sales, depending on exclusivity.

Inkd gives designers a custom page, provides a direct link to your site, and has a strict approval process that attempts to represent the finest designs. Sell your InDesign, QuarkXPress, MS Word, Apple Pages, and Illustrator templates for a 20% fee.

Sell your InDesign templates on Template Cloud, which is part of printing.com. The marketplace lets you set your own price range and you earn a royalty from each sale. The service even allows end-users to customize your templates with an online tool.

Part of the Envato group of sites, Graphic River’s offerings include fonts, icons, vectors, InDesign and Photoshop templates, and Photoshop brushes. Their marketplace gives sellers the option of getting 33% royalty for non-exclusive or a more lucrative 50–70% for exclusive content.

Shopify is a popular WordPress shopping cart module and they accept a limited number of themes from creators. After their strict theme review process, commissions are based on the level of post-sale support the creator will provide.

The biggest bonus of selling your themes as part of a Mac app is the visibility of being in Apple’s Mac App Store. You’ll not only need to create—or pay to create—the app, but you’ll have to pay an annual developer fee of $99. Apple pays a 70% commission.

MOJO Themes is a marketplace for online themes: Joomla, WordPress, e-commerce, and Tumblr. As a seller, you can expect to earn from 50% for a non-exclusive work. The commission rate rises with exclusivity and number of sales, peaking out at 70%.

If you’re making iBooks Author themes, check out the appropriately named iBooks Author Templates. They sell their templates singly or as a membership. They work with a hand-picked selection of sellers, so contact them directly for information.

Creative Market is a well-established online marketplace for web and print templates. Set your own prices, avoid any product review process, keep 70% of sales, and enjoy non-exclusivity and the ability to instantly updates products as needed.

I do sell logo design on creative market, sell well and earning extra money on pocket.

  • Kris says:

As a designer I don’t have any problem with that list.

But when I want to buy a theme I’ll stick with themeforest, because it’s manually selected, so the quality is guaranteed. I never want to buy anything from creative market anymore, usually the theme not good and not professional, so we must fix a lot of thing, it’s wasting time.

All theme from themeforest are ready to go, I like it :)
